Tip of the Week: The Legacy of the White Cane

Writer's picture: Fabrice RFabrice R

The white cane is more than a mobility aid, it’s a profound symbol of independence for people with visual impairments. Its history dates back to the 1920s, when white paint was introduced to enhance visibility. By the 1930s, it became recognized worldwide as a tool for safe navigation.

In 1964, the U.S. officially commemorated October 15th as National White Cane Safety Day, promoting awareness about its importance. Over time, advancements have made white canes lighter, more durable, and customizable to individual needs.
